Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no official statement on this. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races left this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
